Previs software in 2026
Free, open source, browser-based: three different questions, usually answered by three different tools. Here is what each one is actually for, and which can hand a blocked shot to an AI video model.
What previs software has to do
Previsualization is the rough pass where a shot gets decided before anyone pays for it: where the set pieces are, where the actors stand and move, where the camera sits, what lens it wears, how it moves, and where the cut lands. A tool qualifies as previs software if it can hold those decisions in 3D and play them back. Storyboard tools stop at the frame; animation suites go far past it.
In 2026 there is a fourth job: exporting the blocked shot as a first frame or a reference clip for an AI video model, so the generation keeps the camera you chose. That column is new and it changes the ranking.

Free previs software
Two of the tools above are free without an asterisk: Blender and CozyClay. Unreal is free for this use but is a multi-gigabyte install with its own learning curve. Storyflow's free tier is a storyboarding tool, which is fine if a frame is all you need and not fine if you need a camera move.
The honest split is time, not money. Blender can do everything on this page and will take an afternoon to learn just the camera. CozyClay does one thing (block, camera, cut, export) and expects you to be productive in the first ten minutes; there is a seven-step tutorial on the home page that takes about that long.
Open source previs software
Open source matters here for a practical reason: the export is going into a pipeline you do not control, and you want to be able to change the export. CozyClay (AGPL-3.0, GitHub) is built around that hand-off. Blender is the general-purpose answer and has previs add-ons, but none of them target video-model input. Beyond those two, most "open source previs" search results are small blockout demos on GitHub with no releases; useful to read, not to ship with.
Browser-based previs
Browser tools remove the install and the GPU requirement, which is why they suit directors, writers and anyone who is not the 3D person on the team. The trade is depth: no browser tool matches Blender or Unreal for lighting and rendering. For previs that trade is usually correct, because the render is about to be thrown away and regenerated by a model anyway.
CozyClay is the open one. Higgsfield 3D Jutsu is the closed one, and its blockout only feeds Higgsfield's generators. If you want the same blocked shot to go to Seedance today and Veo next week, you want the export in your hands.
Where CozyClay falls short
- Chromium only. Safari and Firefox are not supported.
- No photoreal rendering and no lighting design. The output is a flat clay pass on purpose.
- Motion generation (a character walking, sitting, fighting) needs an NVIDIA machine or the hosted queue; posing and camera work do not.
- Young. Version 1.7 shipped in September 2026. Expect rough edges and a fast-moving changelog.
